Cullaun House was built in 1782 and was originally owned by the Steele family. Tom Steele inherited the house from his uncle and when Tom died the house was passed to his niece. It stayed in her family for three generations and in 1954 it was sold to the Land Commission.

It was acquired by Shannon Development in the 1970s as part of a programme of village hotel development in the Shannon Region but this plan was abandoned and Cullaun House remains in a state of beautiful decay. Its a stunning house in a beautiful setting by a lake and surely deserves to be restored to its former glory. When I was there taking the photos the only sound I could hear was swans taking flight from the lake.
