Castle Curious was built by the eccentric craftsman Johnny Roche, who was born in the 19th century at Wallstown near Castletownroche in Co. Cork. Its believed that he laid the foundations for the castle in the summer of 1847 and he intended to use it as a workshop and home. He wanted the castle to stand as a monument to himself and so he constructed it entirely on his own, sourcing the sand from the Awbeg river and lime from Mallow.

Nearby are the ruins of an old mill building and the final picture shows how the castle and mill looked around 1868. This area is now completely covered in trees and the mill and castle are well hidden in the forest until you get very close to them. This is an idyllic setting.
